PSA: Don't spend money on Retro Rewind

We interrupt this cruise blog for a public service announcement. For a few months now, I have been silently steaming about this Retro Rewind Gold members business but not saying anything because I didn't want to be blacklisted from contests. But I can no longer watch my fellow BHs hand over their hard earned money and get nothing in return.

I signed up for the gold membership last summer, before it was actually active. As you may remember, the sign ups were available for a month or two before we got log in details. At the time, I paid $89 for a year of service. The deciding factor for me signing up was that it was right after the failed video chat with Joe, and Dave promised that we would be rescheduling the video chat soon, and that would be open exclusively to gold members. Not wanting to miss a chance for that, I signed up. I was also interested in the contests, and I liked that the membership included a subscription to Live 365, because I checked the membership prices for Live 365 and the RR subscription was not much more. I thought it was a good two-for-one deal. The kicker was that during the time I signed up, there was a contest about "Sign up by [x date] and be entered to win a trip to LA." A winner for that contest was never drawn.

The problems started nearly right away. I never received information to log into my Live 365 account despite several requests to Dave and Jenn. Once the membership program went online, they switched from Live 365 to another service, and the Live 365 membership that I never got working anyway was removed from the membership perks. After this switch, it was weeks before I could get anything to play on either my home or work computer. Eventually I contacted the streaming service directly and they were able to assist me.

At this point, the price of the membership dropped to something like $39, and Dave was offering lots of promotions such as three months free. There were other contests to encourage registrations, such as a second trip to LA contest, which also never had a winner. I was very upset that I had paid double the price for the same membership, and when I asked Dave about it he said he would make my membership two years. About a month later, I was randomly charged $42 on PayPal from Retro Rewind. After a few emails, Dave reversed the charge, but claimed it was somehow my fault because of my PayPal settings.

The second video chat with Joe did not happen until December, and when it did, it was open to everyone. We did get some on-demand stuff, but not the unreleased Joe songs we talked about before I signed up. The "Exclusive three packs" during each show never happened as far as I know.

In December, Dave started promoting a contest where winners would have access to a private Joe rehearsal show in California. While there would be a few non-paid winners, he said several times that there would be "A LOT" of Gold member winners.

A selection of tweets:
Donations BEFORE the deadline are up for 15 tix up for grabs. ALL OTHER TIX (numerous, numerous) are for GOLDIES ONLY! from web

RT @4everKnights @RetroRewind How many goldies will win tickets? Can you tell us yet? DH: No exact # yet but it will be A LOT. Trust me

FYI a % of ALL December Gold sales are being donated to LGT.org

Hay gang! REMEMBER u HAVE to be GOLD MEMBERS in order to be picked for the mass of tix to Joe's rehearsal show is LA next month!
from web
And then the story started to change:
I'm still waiting to hear back from Joe on the rehearsal before the drawing. Sorry for the delay but I'll give you LOTS of notice! PROMISE!
December 31, still promising rehearsal show access:
LAST DAY to go GOLD for $39.99 (1/2 price) and to get registered 4 tix to Joe's rehearsal show. http://www.retrorewind.com/members.htm from web
No mention of the contest for a week. And then:
Hey gang. Spoke with Joe today & due to some unforeseen issues rehearsals are closed to the public. We're both sorry about that. SO plan B..

RR is picking winners to fly to Chicago to see the show there. You'll meet Joe & see the show and stay in Chitown. Details 2marra :)

Winners for the Joe Mac Chicago contest will be notified privately via email 1st of next week. No further info tonight.

Happy Monday gang!! Emails are being sent to winners of the contest!
from web (Jan 11)

hey gang. Be sure to check your junk mail folders on ur email accounts for an email from me about the contest.
from twidroid (Jan 11)
For most New Kids contests, it takes us under an hour on Twitter to fish out the winner. And yet, for this contest, where there are supposedly lots of winners, we haven't found one.

Add this to
  1. No winners drawn for either trip to LA contest (said to be due to scheduling issues)
  2. Video chats open to anyone
  3. No HWGA unwatermarked photos or video delivered yet although the shoot was in October
  4. Pushing donations to medical fund of a "friend" related to contests (the more you donate, the more entries you get)
  5. Continually fluctuating membership prices and promised features
  6. Lack of response to questions about any of above
And you get a pretty shady operation. But then it gets shadier.

Dave's twins were born at UCLA Medical Center. (Have been informed it was not at UCLA. Would be happy to correct this if given accurate info. Below is still relevant.) Around the holidays, he set up a page (www.retrorewind.com/jules) asking for donations to the hospital:
What we'd like to ask you to do is make a donation in his name instead. The money will be used to buy toys, clothes, and other gifts for some of the other children in his hospital. I've seen some of the other babies and kids in his hospital and I know for a fact they can use our help.

Please click on the donation link below and give what you can. It’s PayPal and you DON’T need an account with them to donate, just a credit or debit card. With your help we can make things a little brighter for some families this holiday season. Thank you for giving us an opportunity to give back this holiday season!

The PayPal link is paid into GiftShop339, which is the account of Jenn's store KenRico Gifts. It would have made a lot more sense if it had been a link to the official UCLA Medical Center Giving page, which lets you choose the pediatrics department as a beneficiary. (Have heard - unconfirmed - that the hospital was USC. They also have an official donation page.)

Through PayPal, we have no way to know if UCLA received any money. If they did, did they receive everything that was donated? In addition, none of the BHs who donated will be able to claim the deduction on their taxes because it was not paid to a non-profit.

On the same topic, while noble, it seems odd that the family would be donating to a hospital they have said they are suing over issues with their son.

I'm sure there are more things I could mention, but I'll leave it at that. If you have experiences to share, please leave them in the comments. I also realize that by writing this, I'm opening myself up to any wrath Dave can throw at me, and I'm prepared for that. (Not sure what he can do to me really, other than call me names, but sticks and stones.) Dave, if you're reading this, I would LOVE to be proved wrong. Tell us who the contest winners were, send us some pics of all the stuff you donated to UCLA, deliver the video shoot extras we were promised. That would be great. But you can still take this as notice that I'm canceling my membership.

Jan 13 Update: This video, posted June 13, 2009 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_OMJeRIJ-g) describes, in detail, the benefits at the time I subscribed (July 20, 2009).

Update: In fairness, I am posting Dave's responses, via Twitter:

As I said, I am very happy to be proved wrong.

Second update: Great news! I heard from a contest winner! She won in early November as part of the Brinley donation contest. (I only vaguely remember it and she doesn't remember much more.) But she will be flying to NYC this weekend to see the Joe show! Her flight and ticket were covered, and she even got a bonus show ticket for her husband. She did pay for her husband's flight. I was very happy to hear this and hope more will come forward.

On the flip side, there are at least three comments below about contest winners that were chosen but never received their prizes, despite repeated attempts on their side to get in contact and make arrangements.

  2. Don't forget the week shortly after I signed up on 8/25 when the Friday afternoon show just DIDN'T happen. No word, no notice, no tweets. He said it was due to employee problems and did it as a lesson to those people.
Taking out your employee issues on your customers is NOT a good idea. Espeically after a big membership drive. I was really scared he had run off with my money that week.

  3. WOW & :(

It seems like LOTS of individuals are taking advantage of kindhearted blockheads lately...

It'll come back to them for sure, but this just reaffirms why I have difficulty trusting people when it comes to finances or charity!

Hugs, Katie! (& anyone else who apparently got duped)

P.S. I work in social services in LA & trust me, peoples' kids are not just "stolen" as they have implied without good reason. So trying to garner attention to get their kids back is like those other so-called blockheads using the "my _____ died" to get the guys' sympathies via a tweet so they can 'favorite' it! *getting off my soapbox now*

  4. I entered a few of his contests by making donations - and winners were never announced. I think he is a shady guy taking advantage of BHs that would do anything for a chance to meet Joe.

    ReplyDelete
  5. I'm *SO* glad someone came out with this. I've been fighting bitterness for months over having been taken advantage of the way I was and the way I know HUNDREDS (thousands?) of other Blockheads were.

I'm tired of the namedropping, the unprofessionalism and the general piss-poor attitude I'm met with whenever I question him about the contest I entered (one of those where a winner was never chosen).

I have nothing else to say other than he's underestimated this army of BH's. SERIOUSLY underestimated.

  6. I Will have To Agree With This. As I Signed Up Back The Price Was $79 As Well. I Was Supposed To Be Entered In Several Of These Contests & Have Yet To Hear Of A Single Winner. I Also Know That Dave Is Going Through A VERY Difficult Time In His Life Right Now Because ALL Of His Children have Been Taken Away. I Am Hoping That Once That issue Gets Resolved That He Can Refocus On This. I Like To Believe That Dave is A Good Person & Is Meaning To Upset People. Maybe By Seeing This He Can Help Resolve These Issues For All of Us.

  7. You guys do realize that since he owns a streaming radio station, that we can send this to the FCC and they will investigate and FINE him and could potentially shut him down. Is that something anyone would be interested in?

  8. I unfollowed Dave a long time ago, he flips out when people disagree with him on one little thing and if we are following someone on twitter, you dont need to spam the same crap OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER, maybe once in the morning and once at night, but no Dave had to do it over and over. I donated something a while back, I cant remember what for now, but it was for something, and then later, Dave wanted me to donate again, personally DMd me to donate at this other thing.. I didnt fall for it the second time....
anyway, thanks for writing this post, I hope it opens up a lot of BHs eyes, Dave is just trying to cash in on the NKOTB phenomina but he lacks clout

  9. Every word absolute truth. I paid $119 for my membership and got to listen to ONE Block Party because when Dave switched away from LIVE365 it was no longer available on my BB as I promised it would be...which is why I signed up in the first place. I've never heard of one person winning anything or being able to take advantage of the benefits promised. I couldn't in good faith donate anymore money...no matter how noble the cause seemed. And to use Joe as bait to get people to sign up makes me even more upset. I do hope there is an explanation for this...I really do. And I would just like to add...it's not necessarily the money I'm upset about. I don't like to be taken advantage of...and that's how I feel.

  11. Thank you Katie! Well stated. I, too, was beginning to wonder what was really going on with these so called Gold memberships! I paid $79 or $89 way back when and then noticed how the price continually dropped for memberships. I feel like I got robbed. This is not right. Hope he has something to say to justify his actions.

  12. But if he is a so-called "friend" of Joe, why would joe allow his fans to get ripped off?? He's always saying what a great guy Joe is, etc. Something is fishy here. Joe would never knowingly allow a friend to rip us off.

    ReplyDelete
  13. Leslie, My worry is that Joe doesn't really know all of the stuff in this blog.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I do remember a winner and her friend coming to the Irvine concert from Arizona I thinbk and getting to meet Joe with Dave and Jenn. What contest was that from. I don't remember the time line but I remember seeing pics of the winners.
It's too bad all this has happened. Good Luck to everyone.

  15. I have never bought a membership to RR just because I really wasn't interested in the "perks" they were offering as incentives. But what really boggled my mind was the blog Jen wrote about their legal issues with their kids. I thought the blog was a very unusual move considering they were planning on suing the doctors, hospital, etc. Any legal advisor would tell you to document everything, but not publicly state your opinion before actually starting the legal process. After reading the blog I felt like there was something off about it. Maybe it was the language used (quite a few profanities for people who were trying to get their kids back)but it just seemed too emotional...almost over done. It was then that I felt almost as if they were trying to extort money from people using sympathy.

If they really are going through all that they are going through, I feel for them, I really do. But if they aren't...beware of a BH scorned.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Maybe someone should try and tell Joe at one of his shows coming up. Anyone with a mac pac card gets 5 mins of his time, right? :)

    ReplyDelete
  17. Wow... I mean, all of that was something I already knew and I'm glad that someone finally said it. I could never bring myself to pay that much money for just a radio station that gave most of the stuff that you could get for free. I never understood it. I'm glad I never gave in.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I wish Joe could know about some of this stuff he does and disassociate himself.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I am quite upset about all this also. I made a small donation and then decided to sign up for Gold for $39.99 only because Dave said that there was the chance for MANY winners for Joe's rehearsal show. If MANY had won and I did not, I would be perfectly fine with that. But I don't think you can advertise something like that as perks of a membership and then cancel it. There should be an option to refund part if not all of the membership fee. And we still have not received any of the photos he said he was going to send.

I understand that he is going through personal issues, but business is business. He needs to get someone else to take care of the business end while he is dealing with things in his life. You cannot just leave your paying customers hanging. It's almost as if I told my mortgage company that I was having personal issues so I will not be honoring my payment for this month or the next and not expect any penalties as a result.

I am not worried that he will try to bill us again at renewal time next year because he has our payment information.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Katie - Fantastic post. Glad to hear I am not the only one who feels taken. Like you, I signed up following the Joey chat debacle & promises of 'great things to come' & I also paid $89.

I can't tell you what a disappointment my Gold membership has been. My list is long (and contains the same items you mentioned), however, I will say my most frustrating part has been Dave's attitude.

Immediately after I signed up, the price decreased (as you noted). I wrote Dave on twitter right away asking why such a dramatic price decrease and wondered why the rest of us paid full price for the same service. I was met with hostility & a response like 'that is how the market works. A store can put something onsale a week after you buy it & that's just how it is'. My response: ummm, no actually - most stores have price adjustments for a period of time after purchase." No response to that.

My next interaction was after one of Dave's twitter tirades. I don't remember what his issue was, but he declared he was done and didn't tweet for a period of several days. No mention of whether the block party would be held. After several days, he reappeared saying he had issues with someone & it was meant to be a joke. Via twitter, I suggested his antics weren't funny to those of us who had spent $ on gold memberships. To his credit, he did reply and apologize saying it wasn't fair to us & he shouldn't have behaved in that way. But in the next minute stated that we didn't get it and couldn't understand how these things worked. (As a 30 year old educated women with a career & family, I can "get" just about anything.)

I have seen multiple tirades on twitter where he huffs & puffs to tell us about:
    - his freedom of speech,
    - his entitlement to speak his mind,
    - that he doesn't need the block party,
    - that he doesn't make money from the block party
    - that if we aren't happy, we can choose not to follow him on Twitter.
    - that if we aren't happy, we don't have to be a member (yet when I asked to cancel membership, his wife informed me that isn't part of their policy)

He is right - I don't need to follow him for his opinions, but how else would I find out about all these contest that only "Goldies" are entered into or the video chats & special things we are supposed to get.

Customer service & tact seems to be missing from Retro Rewind. If I had heard some of the things he has said before, I certainly wouldn't have given him my hard earned cash.

While it is too late for my $, I hope Katie's blog & my comments keep the rest of you from making similar mistakes!

  21. Hello

I have had the same problems and cancelled on my paypal months ago . I never got a log in for over 4 months & eventually got one from facebook ? . I then could not log in . Never gained any perks . Sooon after the UK BH's gained the ineterest of a massive radio one dJ who spoke to donnie & played his single on air . In the UK this was huge and he also said he would play Joe's and Dave gave us so much grief about sugesting it he also was very rude to Vernon ( the DJ ) over twitter of which was deleted after people made there minds up or people where gonna stop following / paying .
I don't follow any more have stopped paying & find it all very strange .
He does need to justify his actions , tell us all whats been going on . Especially for people who have either paid up front or still have paypal payments on going xx
    Thanks KT xxx

  24. Luckily I didn't buy the membership although I was very tempted. I will say this about Dave and it's my first and last interaction with him - when he was going off about people (including this blog) posting the audio of "Here We Go Again", I posted to him on Twitter. I work in the music industry and with knowledge, challenged something that he had said... instead of politely replying like an adult, he just DM'd me very rude remarks. I didn't reply, just blocked him and haven't checked in on him since.

For those wondering about the situation with his kids, it's no secret - they have posted about it on their website. www.retrorewind.com/ourstory

  27. Awesome blog! Thanks for putting it all out there. We never actually purchased the membership, but we know a lot of people that did and were very unhappy with the service and the professionalism (or lack there of) of the service provider.

I've never reported anything to the FCC, but someone asked for information on how to do that, here is an informational link: http://www.fcc.gov/cgb/consumerfacts/informalcomplaint.html

  30. Amen!!! Finally someone who has the guts to call Dave out. I thought the whole Gold membership sounded fishy from the get go and did not buy into it.
Hopefully he can justify all the questions we have for him, Maybe even return money to the unhappy members.

  31. I have been defending Dave and Jenn for a long time, hoping that they would prove everyone wrong and come through. But, no more. I donated twice for the Gold Membership and NEVER got an email from Jenn with a sign in. I emailed Dave AND Jenn about it and was promised it would get taken care of and it never did. I always thought it was weird that he name-dropped so much, even showing his cell phone in a video chat with various celebs names in it.
When his kids got taken away, I thought it was really weird that he was asking people from all over the world that have never met him in person or seen how he was with his kids to write character references for him and Jenn. I know for a fact that it's a little harder to take the kids away than they are letting on. There is more to the story than they are letting on. Personally, that many kids or not, had it been my baby in the hospital, I would have found a way to make it work...to be with my baby. Sorry y'all, just not buyin the B.S. anymore.

  33. bigger fish to fry...

it's a BIG WORLD. not everyone knows everyone...

    FYI Mr. Harris-

This is a small world! Especially if you're a BH!! We revel in each others' victories, chances at face time, pictures, M&G experiences, etc. You
re making us sound like jealous fiends! The jealous one, my dear, is you because you've obviously got enough to rant about. Take your anger, frustration and anger out on those bigger fish... seriously

Be the bigger person and either deliver on your word or refund peoples' hard earned money for NOT delivering. Because I'm sure a lot of educated women can figure out how to fry your fish with the FCC...

Sorry to take up space on your blog, Katie, but since it's obvious that Dave's reading- he NEEDS to see this!

    ReplyDelete
  34. Wow, EXCELLENT blog! I can't believe what has happened! This is ridiculous, and I am glad that someone had the guts to say what obviously lots of other BHs are feeling. Hopefully something good can come out of this. Well said, Katie, well said.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Typical DH style... rant and rave and avoid the subject. He wants to pin point it down to "sore losers" about the contests when in fact, that has nothing to do with it. We don't care WHO won - we'd just like to know THAT someone actually won! And Dave there are many more issues to be addressed than just the contests - be a real businessman and address them professionally instead of throwing a temper tantrum.

  40. Thanks for saying what needed to be said, Katie. I unfollowed RR and stopped listening to the Block Party a long time ago as a result of Dave's far too frequent rants and raves towards us, his CUSTOMERS. It is not being unreasonable or demanding to ask for what you were promised. Getting to listen to a few hours of NKOTB music was not worth being called names and having to deal with endless pleas to become a "Gold" member.

Hopefully this will finally expose what I am certain is a shady operation.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I know the person who posted this and why. I will say that I have been suspect of Dave and his "donations " for a while.I developed a problem with Dave always asking us to donate to something. The guys don't even ask us to donate as much as Dave would. (Unlike Dave, the NK do realize most of us are having money issues.)I stopped following Dave when he blew up about "Here We Go Again" being leaked on Youtube. He tried to paint the blockheads that posted the song as evil, when all they were doing was helping those of us who didn't get to hear it. As we all know, most things are leaked on Youtube and we still buy it no matter what. We love and support our New Kids on everything they do as a group or solo. I just believe something isn't white in Dave Harris' milk and I am glad I have nothing to do with him. Thanks for being brave enough to put out what most have been allowing to fester too long.

  42. I'm so glad you posted this. It's been bothering me for quite a while as well. First, I think that if you're going to offer a contest for LOTS of people to win, shouldn't you check to make sure it will work out? I think the excuse of "closed rehearsals" is pretty weak. Second, let's say the rehearsal situation DID change, people should be offered refunds for their membership if they want (prior to the winner being announced of course). That's all for now. I'm just glad I'm not alone in these thoughts.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Well, I never paid for RR because I wouldn't use it enough. But I think it's kinda shady that he hasn't provided what he said he would. I do think it's funny that he is saying his family is more important than all of this stuff, but he keeps tweeting about it. It's all very weird to me.

  50. Thanks Katie for this Blog. Always thought I'm the only one who feels this way about the gold membership. The main reasons for me to sign up were:
    - VIP membership for Live365
    - Dave said that blockparties are only one hour for non-gold members
    - promise of contests, unreleased songs and web-chats

Shortly after I signed up they left Live365 for whatever reason. It took ages for the new link to actually play on my computer and even then it crashed often enough. Now they sent me an email in Dec asking to confirm the IP nr. Still haven't heard back from them yet and the old log in isn't working anymore.
With the exception of the contest for the FS show (not sure if it was Dave's contest or from Joe done via Dave)I've never seen a winner for the contests either.
It also annoyed me when he stated that Donnie can't sing as well as Joe after he released I got it. Well, we all know that, incl. Donnie. Guess he was pissed off because Donnie didn't do an interview with him.
It did piss me off when he attacked Vernon Kay for asking Joe to call him before he would play Joe's song. Obviously that's how radio stations operate. The guys always have an interview or at least a short chat with someone from the radio station if they play their song for the first time. It didn't bother Donnie and he happily chatted with Vernon. I'm sure Joe wouldn't have minded either talking to Vernon so his song would be played on one of the biggest radio shows in the UK. Guess Dave sabotaged that nicely with him calling Vernon Kay out. Sometimes it appears to me that he gets jealous when other radio stations play songs from the guys. Before, we all kept thanking him for supporting the guys and playing their songs etc. as he was the only one that did so. If other radio stations play the song too he's not so "special" anymore. I also love listening to NKAirplay (one of the reasons why I wanted the VIP for Live365)they do an amazing job but don't expect us to "worship" them for doing the shows or get into hissy fits if someone doesn't share their opininon.
I wonder if Joe knows about all this as it seems there isn't as much interaction between him and Dave as there used to be. But maybe that's just from our outsider's point of view.
Katie, thanks again for putting our thoughts into words and being such an integral and special member of the BH family. Take care and enjoy your Joe show!

  52. During this last contest, Dave said a portion of the new Gold Membership fees would go to LGT.org

As of Oct 21, 2009, the Let's Get This foundation was NOT accepting monetary donations. I heard this directly, personally, from Joe while he shared this with another fan who wanted to make a donation on behalf of a large group of fans.

Joe's suggested was to make the donation directly to First Book. He supported that method of donation and though it would be a very good idea.

I don't know if anything had changed since 10/21/09, or if Dave MEANT TO SAY he was donating to First Book, but something is not quite right there as well.

  53. I am behind you 100% KT!! i was explainging to my hubby who has done a law degree about twhat happend and he told me never to send another penny to them that it sounds like a serious case of fraud. i am sick of walking on eggshells waitingfor him to throw a temper tantrum when we ask reasonable questions as to what is happening. I love his comment about it being a big world and us mnot knowing the winners, does he really not get the blockherad sisterhood yet???? if they are out there, we know about them!!! I think the whole thing just keeps gettign dodgier and dodgier. i won't be renewing my membership, we have not gotten what we paid for at all. How hard is it to post the joe pics for us... that would have tided us over for awhile.... HMmm i am over the BS!

  54. Once Dave started charging for Gold Memberships he had a responsibility to his paying customers. He can rant and rave on twitter all he wants (as he's doing now) but that doesn't change the fact that he accepted money from customers and didn't deliver. If he feels he did deliver then he needs to be transparent about how.... because I sure don't see it.

I stopped following him when he called us all 'low life pieces of sh*t' over the HWGA thing.

  58. Someone should see if we can find out from UCLA if the donation was ever made. I found it odd that the money went to Jenn's shop too. I hope for everyone's sake that there was really a donation made. L
ike it has been said already, legally they have to tell us who the winners of the contests are. For this reason. Hello, like we wouldn't have heard from the winners already. These are BH sisters, don't you get it?

    ReplyDelete
  59. Where is the proof of this donation he allegedly made to the hospital that he is going to sue? I think the charity is DH's wallet. California doesn't joke around about fraudulent "charity" donations so he better hope that every penny of that money was donated to the hospital. He should have announced a final total, showed paperwork to the hospital and photos of "all the kids" that were going to get the gifts. Maybe we funded his Christmas?

    Shame on you Dave Harris.

  60. OK... even if there were 5 winners, odds are at least ONE of them would be on the main forum or Twitter. Seriously.... we may not all "know each other" but the BH community is pretty tight knit. LOL

  62. I have to say that I never bought a gold membership and have quit listening to the block party since he left live365. It was all I listened to on RR to begin with. After seeing his ranting and nasty attitude towards us, the people that listen, and especially the people that fund his operation through their purchase of memberships, I'm glad that's the course I took. When you are in a business of providing a service, customer service has to be your top priority, especially in this economy. Calling your customers nasty names and not following up on stated benefits is not how one operates a successful, honest business. The personal issues are not a part of this. This has been going on long before the twins were even born.

Paypal allows you to file a claim against a payment. If you are concise and can prove what was offered with a memembership (actual benefits, not just contest entries) you should win and Paypal will refund part or all of your money.

Also, the FCC and BBB are good places to report to. I would do that also. Let them know if you received a refund or not.

Also, if you received any personal messages from the owners, I would save them and attach them to any claims/reports you make. Having evidence always makes for a stronger case.

    Hope this helps.

  65. The thing that REALLY bothered me was how Dave was encouraging people to SPAM Joe about writing a song with him. If he is as good of friends with Joe as he says he is, then why would we have to spam Joe? Couldn't he just pick up the phone and just ASK Joe???? The guys hate spam and he was encouraging it.

    ReplyDelete
  66. If I was going through what they were going through, I certainly wouldn't be sitting on my computers posting to @twitter! I would be on the phone DEMANDING this be straightened out.. I have already posted anonymously above on this blog and agree with Katie 100% and with everyone else on here. Dave is just a whiny child who needs to grow up and either give what he has promised or refund. That vlog that had him and Joe in I guess some living room a few months back, I thought it was hilarious, cuz Joe kept cutting Dave off, like telling him basically to STFU! Too funny... now I see Jenn is saying Dave is passionate and we should know that... yeah but we get tired of it over and over and over, one little thing goes wrong and he gets all pissy, and if something doesnt fall through because of reasons out of your hands IE the Joe rehearsal, maybe you should FIGURE IT OUT before you make a contest... ok, Im done.. for now

    ReplyDelete
  67. Well said I thought I was the only one who thought this guy was shady.

I really think some who made one the donations to charity should contact the charity and see if the money got to them. I guess they wont tell you but they should investigate if enough people ask question????

    ReplyDelete
  68. I get that Dave and Jenn are going through a rough time with their kids, BUT as many people have stated here, they are running a business. They are taking money from people by making promises that they are not able to keep, for WHATEVER REASON (beyond their control or not). The reasons don't matter...if you take someone's money, you darn well better provide the service. It's not like it has just been one thing that has fallen through the cracks. One or two things, I could understand and forgive. But it's MANY things...95% of what has been promised over the past 8 months of Dave begging for Gold members, has NOT been delivered. If their family is so important (which it SHOULD be), then maybe they need to take a step back from RR and take care of it first. Continuing to beg for money (re: gold memberships, donations for "charities", etc) while they are not able to deliver on their promises is exactly why they are receiving such a backlash right now. Don't get mad at your PAYING CUSTOMERS who are upset over services not received, simply because you have personal issues. Here's an idea: STOP taking people's money until you get your sh*t together and can make good on your promises.

  71. The person who won the Irvine contest just so happened to be from a state where it's like $60-$75 to fly them in (Arizona) to So Cal. Something smelled fishy on that one. Wonder if the new Chicago contest winners will all be somewhere close to that one as well. Maybe the "charity" money is what is really going to fund these imaginary contests.

Also, my favorite thing about the Joe/DH chat? How Joey seemed very annoyed that Dave was running late. So Cal traffic is notorious for being bad, leave as early as you need to not to hold Joe up. Also get your technology in check before hosting a celebrity "web chat". Way to be professional.

  72. How is a businessman going to throw a temper tantrum and take away perks for his paying customers? If my donation just paid for their Christmas, I'm going to be pissed! I have people to buy gifts for and I don't have an endless supply of money. Man, I feel like such a sucker.

  75. I purchased the Gold membership in July for the $119 price. Almost immediately, the price dropped to $79 and then to $39! My Gold membership was not activated until September. I believe I listened to a total of 4 block parties before switching from Live365 to the IP address that I could never get to work. Membership costs never went back up to the $119 price and now Dave refers to the Gold package at the "regular" price of $79. I wrote an email and several twitter messages to Dave asking why my price was so much higher. I never got any response. Foolishly, I still donated $15 to the Lets Get This Foundation and extra money to the sick child. I am on a fixed income just like everybody else. I feel cheated.

I am very sorry for Jenn and Dave for the custody battle with their children. I would never wish that horror on anyone. I offer my continued prayers that custody will be awarded in the best intrest for their children.

  77. Unfollowed that fool soooo long ago! I have done LOTS of chats w/Joe,Danny & JK & have NEVER paid anyone EVA-they all did this through out their solo careers-So when I saw he was saying u needed to be Gold to chat I had enough of his pack of lies. I assure you none of the guys would ever chat for something so small as to answer chat questions-Dont even get me started on his Non-Profit "donation" B.S.-TOO MUCH TO SAY (Plus its a darn shame that the very hospital they gave all of our hard earned BH $$ to for taking such good care of their son went on to do such a horrible thing to them & now I apparently hear the hospital DIDNT take good care of their son-OY VEY!)Honestly I think Joe humors him bc he makes him feel obligated. Most of the old joe video stuff he put on demand was stuff i'd seen over on the RR site loooooong ago anyways & i am not gold.(But i am Live365 VIP which I could not use)He constantly went on about he'd been supporting Joe for years but I followed Joes entire solo career-I NEVA once saw/heard this man doing any promotional stuff w/Joe(nor do I now DH:"WHEN JOES STUFF COMES OUT YOU ALL JUST LET ME HANDLE THESE RADIO FOOLS TO GET JOES MUSIC PLAYED-I SPEAK THEIR LANGUAGE"-I paraphrase but not by much)& I can name several people that were "Mac involved"at that time during Joe's career-then again I listened to MAINSTREAM radio not an internet show out of someones living room. Last point (though there are so many more)1 of the main things he strung those Joe girls along w/is all of the guys solo material-alot of us have all of that so he is of no used to us & what a shame that he asked you all to pay for it.:( He also used to air sound bites of being closed friends w/JK & him being a DHP he stopped airing those after all the NK fans started following him-My guess is he prob didnt want anyone to ask him about it. He had 543 followers when I started following him-Since then he now has about 6K they are all NK fans or spam-He does a well known twitter trick of just following random people (though he does SEEK out NK fans) & hoping they will follow back (twitter manners) in order to increase ones followers-take a gander at his follow list & you will easily see that...Its a well known twitter tactic-beyond that most that are following him are NK fans. Joe should disassociate himself w/him bcuz from were I stand they are not "BROS" (his word not mine)If we all remember correctly it was the BHs who kept tweeting Joe asking him to follow RetroRewind (after more of Dave's very well placed hints to BHs-like all his others)--Sorry for the rant but glad you finally woke up-Best thing about it is you have lots of followers & have always defended him so now maybe more people will see the truth & take off the blinders!!!--TIP OF THE ICEBERG--

  78. I agree with everything Katie has said!
To top it all off he is now saying No More Contest! So he is taking away another "perk" that was promised to those who paid for Gold Membership. I don't have a law degree but I am fairly certain that you can't CHANGE the "perks" at your every whim. People should receive what they were promised at the time of purchase.
I hope that Joe does find out about all of this and set the record straight as to what has really been going on.

  84. Honestly, back when Dave requested donations for Brinley (the "sick kid"), I thought long and hard before I chose to donate. I felt bad that the cause, while extremely worthy, wasn't the focus, but rather some contest for something to do with Joe. I emailed Dave specifically and asked him to ensure that there were additional updates on Brinely even after the contest was over because I thought it would be a shame if he was forgotten once it was all said and done. Dave actually emailed me back and said of course he would do that and I was "sweet for caring"...since then, there have been no updates on Brinley at all, and I believe that the "winner" for that contest was also a personal friend of Dave's. I am not *at all* sad about having donated for Brinley *IF* the money actually went to his hospital bills as Dave said. But now, that's up to question, because, I think, Dave's integrity is up to question. Does anyone know if there is any way to confirm the donations actually went to where they were supposed to go? The donation on my paypal simply says that it went to RetroRewind (aye!)...

    ReplyDelete
  85. People within Joe's management were made aware of the situation last week and again today after this blog was published.

Also, in retaliation to Dave's comment about us all being sore losers, I have two things to say:
    1) Winners would've had to have actually been announced for us to be sore about losing.
    2) It's not just the LOSERS of the contests who have been lied to and put off. A friend of mine won one of these contests and she's been given excuse after excuse when she's asked for details.

  88. Wow!! All of this really bothers me and I feel so stupid for buying a RetroRewind Gold membership, especially since my gut was telling me something was off! I basically paid a lot of money to listen to a broadcast that already streams for free!

I don't like being used, cheated and lied to! What's even worse is that he is supposed to be Joe's "friend."

So the question is, where do we go from here? I'm willing to stand with my sisters and do whatever is necessary!!

    ReplyDelete
  89. Honestly without the chats with Joe or exclusive things why even bother with it, we already have all of the NKOTB songs and no one wants to hear him talk anyway. Ladies, open up your itunes press play and save yourself some money. Give your own commentary between songs. Boom, your own personal station.

  90. I unfollowed him a long time ago. When DH started ranting about people not buying gold packages and he was going to shut down the site. It went on and on. I just unfollowed and moved on. I saw Katie's tweet about it this morning and I had no idea what was going on because I no longer follow him nor listen to his shows (and haven't since June '09).

If anyone has not received what they were promised and have purchased their "gold account" within the past 30 days AND used a credit card or debit card, call your bank and request a chargeback. Print out the info from the web page and save it for your records along with your purchase information. If you paid with PayPal and did not use a credit card, file a dispute with them. You did not receive what you purchased! You should have an ample case to receive a refund.

I can't see DH just issuing refunds. I personally believe the money is long gone and spent. Hence why he is such a jerk when he is called out. He can't produce ANYTHING. He can't prove there are winners, he can't provide interviews or pictures that never happened.

It's sad when you can't purchase something without wondering if it's a scam... :(

  92. Well said Katie! I unfollowed Dave a long time ago because I couldn't take the disrespect he has towards his listeners. And I got tired of all the name dropping he did.

I thought less of Dave during the NKs summer tour. I was involved with one of the book drives & the company I worked for wanted to donate books but needed a tax ID number. Since Dave was such good "Friends" with Joe I emailed him and asked if there was anyway he could contact Joe on my behalf to get the information. Dave told me he forwarded the email to Joe.

Well as it got closer to the concert and I didn't hear anything I sent Dave a follow up email. I knew there was a chance he wouldn't hear from Joe because of Joe being on the road. However Dave never responded to me. I sent him two other emails and even tweeted him - nothing. If Joe didn't get back to him then a simple "looks like I can't get you the info" would be fine.

That action made me think less of Dave. Even though it was something minor I thought it was disrespectful to say you would try and help and then ignore the person.

Then all his tirades and rants over the past few months are so unprofessional. I definitely feel BHs are being taken advantage of and I applaud KT for taking a stand!

    ReplyDelete
  93. I support you 100% and I'm now wondering if Dave has realised he's bitten more than he can chew? I wonder if he thought no-one would support you? Does he not realise this isn't the playground or a game where people take sides and do battle? Come on Dave grow some b*lls and answer these legitimate questions with grace and honesty!

    ReplyDelete
  94. ****EDIT**** I'm the anonymous poster from earlier typo:I meant to type "I assure you none of the guys would ever CHARGE(NOT chat)for something so small as to answer chat questions!" BTW-don't you think the "SHAREHOLDER" meetings were Joe's attempt to distance himself?? No MIDDLE MAN-straight from the Mac himself? Hmmmmmmmm???????!

    ReplyDelete
  95. Wow DH has now reached new depths! Surely he doesn't really expect us to believe he bothered Joey with his playground squabble does he? I have great difficulty understanding his mentality, does he not know how to apologise when he's wrong?

    ReplyDelete
  96. This is all extremely shady! I also noticed some of this. I unfollowed Dave a couple weeks ago because I was so sick & tired of him begging for money. The only tweets I ever saw from him the last month or so were to ask for money. Thank God I never donated anything!

Thank you Katie for not being afraid to speak up!

    ReplyDelete
  97. I have a feeling that if Joe gave him money for something and didn't get it, they would NOT be "ALL good".

    ReplyDelete
  98. This has all the signs of a classic bait-and-switch scam. Whatever the circumstances, he has a history of making promises, taking money, and not delivering what was promised.

California has laws about contests and sweepstakes and how they must be administered and he doesn't appear to be following ANY of them. He should stop ranting, because he is pretty lucky no one has complained to the BBB, FCC or the Attorney General's office yet!

If you have time to take money for a contest, you have time to administer it correctly and follow the applicable laws. Thanks Katie for looking out for BHs. BHs, PLEASE don't let people take advantage of our love for the guys by taking our money this way. The guys would never want that to happen.

  101. I think the whole thing is quite amusing. KT wrote a blog on her OWN site, which is well within her freedom of speech (and whatnot) about HER opinion...and he responds with a VERY mature rant on twitter, a completely public forum....now, I personally am struggling to do my NK related events, and do not have the $$ to do the gold thing (though I thought about it at one point) but I got fed up with all the various crap that spewed from his tweets. I wish him and his family that their problems get taken care of quickly, and to the best interests of the CHILDREN, but that does not mean that I support him anymore. His site hasn't worked in I don't know how long and his rants have gotten tiresome. I can listen 2 the same music (and way less drama) on NKAirplay or on PandoraRadio or *gasp* by listening 2 my own purchased music that is on my OWN computer....
But I'm done now, and since I unfollowed DH and NOT KT, really, who is the loser?

Lets stand together-dont give in just because you're hoping he really is good friends w/Joe & want to win a contest-The real power is showing him keep your rinky dink contest-IF IT DOESNT COME THE NKs Walk Away (Like Joes Video Contest or Donnie & Jordans Personal Contests)BHs are strong & enough is enough!!! 104. He just keeps digging his own grave, doesn't he. As much interaction he had with BH's in the last year, he still doesn't seem to understand how we tick. If you attack one of us, the whole BH family will stand up and defend this person: TOGETHER WE ARE ONE - FOREVER AND ALWAYS. Simple as that.
Also very immature how he retiliates. Instead of responding to the questions / facts mentioned by Katie he just tries to make her look bad. And then saying to look at his tweets to see what he wrote. Hard to get the whole picture since he deleted most of them...
Katie, be assured, we all stand behind you. Good for you to acknowledge what most of us didn't have the courage to say.

  108. The numbers he had before BHs decided to befriend him were much less then 1000.... The microphone he has, we obviously paid for and without us listening he will be speaking to very few people.... I would also go as far as to say some of the "friendships" he claims may not be as tight as he thinks, but thats just my opinion, obviously not based on any real knowledge... Its probably not wise to threaten your only large group of supporters, particularly when what they support is your livlihood and all they did wrong was ask for some answers about why they have not gotten the services they paid for.

  109. Wow...I'm stunned by these responses....

  110. Didn't he start the whole gold membership thing to pay for a better web service because us BH's were crashing his system? And to pay for royalties, etc, etc? That's what he told everyone anyway. And, if he is so close with John Stamos and Joey, why did he have to get his followers to spam them to get them to follow him on twitter? Why not just call them and ask? Or, better yet, why didn't they do it in the first place, seeing as how they are so close.
This is all way too fishy for me. Glad I never got the Gold Membership.

I would be very cautious to sign my name to a character reference letter to someone I do not know on a personal basis & put my own name/repuation on the line!...I guess as an educated professional I'm just astounded they would ask that of people they've never met.

I wish the best for them & the children though (My dissatisfied customer opinion aside.)

  116. One obvious proven fact is that when you are guilty, you run your mouth. When you are innocent, you know that truth will prevail and you calmly collect yourself, your emotions and your facts. I will admit I am a gold member and I've donated to his "causes". Never again. Once all the facts are put together, the case is obvious. I feel empathy for whatever situation his family is in, but I am an executive for a big company. Bottom line is: there is a job to do and you need to step up to the plate and do the job. If not, you need to get someone else to do it while you deal with your personal issues. My personal gut feeling: PONZI SCHEME. Google it...

  119. No need to email PONZI SCHEME I know exactly what it is-Problem with the whole RR thing is a lot of people underestimate BHs & forget that many of us are very educated & part of things they may not even imagine-NKOTB is our escape-Not the ONLY thing we have in our life, as so many people seem to believe about ALL BHs.

I think RR will be surprised by how many of us walk away.WE ARE NOT KIDS ANYMORE-PUT UP,OR SHUT UP

  123. I commend Katie for helping everyone feel like they have a voice & shouldn't feel bullied or scared to say something because of the repercussions that might happen!

I never had a problem with Retro Rewind or Dave way back at the beginning before this whole gold thing went down. I never got gold because I couldn't afford it & I could always listen to NKOTB on my own playlist if I needed it. But the cluster f**k that it turned into & the treatment of BHs who were nothing but giving to keep listening to RR, is just completely ridiculous!

Then seeing so much ask, want & need for everyone's money...if it wasn't one thing, it was for another thing...in this crazy economy & being a BH, by nature we all are broke anyhow...when asking to donate for this & that & us BH's already being taken advantage by other people, we had a trust to donate with the hope of winning contests.

On of my friends 'won' one of these contests & have been trying to get info for it & was never contacted back. Then the 1 email she got back was, rude, mean & un-called for...she has a family to plan around & was asking just simple questions...of course the prize never happened & she had to make plans on her own so she could see Joe's show!

All i'm saying...seeing all these replies & how people are feeling...that is what is speaking volumes & is being heard...if you can't stand the heat, then get out of the kitchen...sometimes the truth hurts DH!

What goes around, comes around! I hope all can be worked out & some people need to see how they are treating us & need to re-evaluate what they are doing.

    That is all....

It all speak for itself-(& lets be honest we ALL know why they have been tryin to collect peoples IP addresses over the months-so they could retaliate when some one anonymously says something they dont like-really had nothing to do with Logins)
Thanks KT for keeping no secrets & putting it all out there what we were thinking-in the past when any1 has stood up to him he has tried to turn other BHs against our fellow sisters---His plan waas foiled this time
Dear Dave & Jenn, I know your reading this-once again YOU HAVE NOT DELIVERED (even the answers as promised)*shocker*

  133. Thanks for posting this KT!!

Yes, I have a Gold account--though it took 2 months to get a PW and Dave tweeted that I could get 2 extra months for the missed month, though I'm not sure how since he didn't ask for my PP addy--because a) I'm a Joe girl and he *seemed* to have info/goodies with Joe b)The 2 extra hours of the blockparty (though I haven't heard that in a WHILE!) c) contest entries

Now, I haven't received any of that! I have also donated to his "charities"...anyone have success in getting money back? I looked into filing a claim, but didn't find the right box to check-what should I put?

I *really* hope that he is on the up and up, but I'm not so sure. I wish he would answer the questions you posted and show us some "proof"

  136. Wow, I see Jenn's response on her blog, and it seems pretty...skeezy. OK, so things change. I get that. Life gets in the way for all of us. But when circumstances change that impact the running of MY business, I am held accountable. Proper form is to fix the issue or provide a refund to the party involved. So far on Jenn's blog response, all I hear is "wah wah wah, things didn't go the way we had planned"...and then she puts the onus on everyone else to have their issues resolved - when MOST people have already tried and been ignored/chastized for it. This isn't right, and I do hope there is legal action taken against Dave/Retro Rewind.

    ReplyDelete
  137. Good Lord-Is that really their answer? I need to address each of her answers but I have to get to bed as I AM gainfully employed-I'm pretty disappointed it turned into a Slam Fest of KT as opposed to addressing the core problem-Maybe I'll come back tomorrow & address each of those awful answers-"we didn't say this 7 thats not what we said" & YOU'LL BE HEARING FROM THEIR ATTORNEY? Yikes, they love the legal system don't they...But Jenn & Dave really How's that working for ya so far? (the legal system) & please address many of these comments or respectfully concede & return patrons $$$$
P.S. CAN U PLEASE PROVIDE US WITH A RECEIPT/CONFIRMATION FROM FIRST BOOK (WHICH THEY WOULD HAVE PROVIDED)FOR THE DONATION RR supposedly gave to them based on our donations for the L.A. contest to go to the NKOTB show (you know the 1 where YOU & JENN inserted YOURSELVES in the M&G pic with the winner & NKOTB-scary) Thanks

Exactly! If you guys aren't the shady and sneaky people we all believe you to be at this point, then show us proof! It should be easy to do if you actually did donate the money like you said you were. Instead of wasting time on a blog that answered NOTHING, why not actually get some facts and data together?

  155. Katie... I am so with you on this... I also posted some comments on Jenn's blog. You are simply stating your concerns in a blog... I say bring on the lawyers... I don't see that you did anything wrong. We all have a right to let others know of things we aren't happy with. I had a bad experience at a car dealership about 6 years ago and you bet I told EVERYONE I knew not to go there if you want a car. I just bought a new car July 7 and you bet I didn't go there... I went to a different dealer... same make of car, just different dealer. I say if you want to hear 80s and 90s music... go to XM Radio they have "Decades" and I have 80s, 90s & 2K programmed along with Lithium (90s Alternative). LOVE IT!!! I've had cut backs at work this passed year because of the economy so I never was able to sign up for the Gold but so glad I didn't. I would have been upset if I traded XM for that.

I am sure you are but keep your head up :)

  156. by the way... I wonder if Joe knows how much they push their "GOLD" membership by using win this or that having to do with Joe... such as a trip or a rehearsal show... because it seems to me that they pushed it quite a bit based on things that "are beyond their control" Right?

  157. 1. Regardless of what you're personally going through, if you own a business, you need to follow through with your promises, you need to deliver your services. If you can't personally deliver it, make arrangements for your customers to get what they are paying for.
    2. DH's twitter rant/tyraid speaks volumes. Instead of trying to justify any of the points KT made, he went on the attack. Name calling all of us and punishing us(taking away contests) for questioning him. Unprofessional much Dave???
    3. Getting Joe involved was immature. This is NOT an issue with Joe and crying to Joe about how the BHs are 'hurting is feelings' is childish and amatuer. Who's a Sore loser know Dave?
    4. Jenns' blog was more of an attack on KT than justifications for their behavior/actions, nor informative. Not only that, KT's blog is informational & professional. Whereas Jenn's was personal, aggresive, frivolous, & condescending. That TV pricing scenerio is BS, I've gotten price adjustments w/o hassle. & blaming Joe & is unpredictible schedule is just ridiculous. Scapegoat much, Jenn??
    5. The drama w/ their children is unfortunate, and I don't know the story so I won't get into it, but I will say that I'm in the Social Services field, I know Child Protective Services and they do not take kids away from homes lightly. There had to be insurmountable evidence for officials to take all their children out of their home & into offical custody.

I have so much more to say, but I'll just leave it at that or I'd end up writing my own blog! LOL

We got your back KT! Thanks for sharing.

  159. I too bought RR Gold back in September (24 mths @ US$99) - I joined in particular for the benefits of Gold only video chats and the Live 365 VIP membership. I was disappointed when the video chat with Joe finally went ahead and was open to all and the Live 365 membership was removed when RR made changes. I have tried on occasion to listen to RR online, especially when Dave is announcing winners to the competitions but am unable to connect for any length of time without dropping out - I did tweet Dave asking for assistance but never received a reply...not wanting to bother with the hassle I have since stopped trying to listen and just written off the money spent.

I haven't been impressed with Dave's twitter tantrums and remarks to/about BH's (eg HWGA) and today is no exception. I've unfollowed and will not be giving any more money to RR or associated requests.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Dave posted this on Twitter on 12/14/09 After speaking to the agencies involved of getting gifts & such to some of the children in Julian's hospital we have to up the end date. My question is what agencies were involved. If they can tell us this we could call the agencies and see if any donations were made. They also had a goal of $3,000 and the last twitter update they needed only $400 to meet goal.So at least $2600 should have bought a lot of gifts for someone.

  164. I understand that things happen and that contests or video chats etc. need to be rescheduled or canceled for reasons we don't know about. BUT...if ChargerJenn's response to that was something about how concerts and events get rained out all the time.....then why are we not getting a refund? When some of the NKOTB shows were canceled in early summer, ILAA and the regular ticket company refunded in full. If RetroRewind is professional, then they would do the same. I understand that it may be different considering these are yearly memberships as opposed to single event memberships, but still- something should be done! What seems to be happening is that Dave is making promises before checking with Joe first. He should have a contract so that if Joe needs to reschedule, then it would still get done. I.E: He should not have promised a contest to attend a rehearsal until he knew for sure that it could happen. If something comes up last minute, then it should be handled privately- in my opinion.....As for saying that RetroRewind is not just for BHs, I understand. However, he knew that he would get a lot of business from them by making the kinds of promises he made, so why use the fact that there are non-BH members in response to that?

    ReplyDelete
  165. I was not going to post anything, but after reading some comments my integrity has been called into question (albeit not on purpose I think) and I would like to say something quick and to the point. I won the contest with the donations to the kid named Brinley. I (my husband and I) chose to donate before there actually was a contest, which is why when my name was annouced and people sent text messages I was a bit caught off guard (it was 11 pm in Virginia and we were in BED!).

Yes there has been a bit of a delay in my travel plans, but they are not on the part of Dave or Joe - they were because of me. I am a professor at a college and we start school back TODAY. Thus the Chicago show in the middle of next week was going to be hard to pull off (when things get really going). I have been emailing Dave back and forth to get this resolved. Also, I wanted to take my husband with me even if it meant me paying for that part because the contest was for one person. That took some working out.

The other thing I would like to say is that the only way I previously knew Dave was talking to him on Twitter. We have had short conversations on there, and I think I have been in the Retrorewind chat 2 or 3 times? We are not old family friends, we are not related, and as of last night I have spoken to him on the phone ONE time to get things arranged (he has my number, I don't even have his). I am attending the NYC show since it is on the weekend and a quicker/easier hop from Virginia where I live. I do exist, I did donate, and I won. I did not know I was going to win ahead of time, and I am not pretending to go now. Dave even posted I won on my Facebook page back in November, and a good number of my friends should remember it as well. I do not think that I should have to post my reciepts and airline ticket stubs either to prove I am real as a contest participant. My husband spent last year and three months (Until August 09) in Iraq, I want to go and have a fun time - but now I feel guilty for that because of things other people think. Having people to support my husband's deployment and now I feel like being on there has put me in a bad position.

I cannot vouch for other contest winners as I do not know them, and I probably will not be seeing them as I am going to NYC and not CHI. I just ask that if you have questions about whether or not I was "set up" to win, just talk to me about it. I am on twitter, and probably will post pictures for everyone when I go to the show, I am asking that this debate not keep me from going and having a good time, or keep people from assuming I am a good - normal person (@drdeming). - Allison

  166. ChargerJenn's response blog was more of the same grand school recess argument. Yes, businesses (and successful businesses) do offer a price guarantee. I guarantee you I can walk into Best Buy and purchase a tv, and if two weeks later that same television is on sale, Best Buy will refund the difference. Most major, successful business will do that. I worked at Best Buy back in the day, I know. And I've taken advantage of the same model from other businesses (Walmart, Target, Circuit City). The solution of those businesses is not to put extra money down (oh well, you can't get a refund on that tv, but why don't you go ahead and upgrade to a bigger tv for less...two weeks later).

Thankfully I was not a paying member of RetroRewind so I don't know and won't comment about the things that were promised and never delivered, or altered except to say that it does seem like RetroRewind could have kept the paying subscribers more in the loop about changes and offered alternatives. It seems like none of that was done, just that 'things happen' and people should get over it.

  167. Isn´t it in a way strange that they are NOW starting to answer open topics (okay, not really, but at least there is kind of a reaction from their side...), after Katie wrote this blog?? 170. Really? Finally! I'm not surprised AT ALL!! I am SOOOO glad I have never paid for Gold. I was kind of waiting around to see if there were any exclusive chats. It really urked me that Joe would EVEN discriminate his fans by ONLY chatting with Gold ones, (that he made no money from). I am proud to be a braveheart. Joe takes care of us. :P I will also say that I donated $10 (was it to Brinley?) for the online chat drawing. . . They did call a name, did anyone know that "winner"? Kind of worried about my paypal information "out there". :(. Guess I'll just have to watch it. If he has "thousands" of non nk fans, then just get over it! I've seen his @replies, and they are NOT too hard to keep up with!

  171. I am happy to hear that at least one contest winner has received her prize, as I am sure Katie is as well. Obviously the ideal outcome here would be that there are reasonable explanations for everything. Also, I truly hope the winner of that contest has a GREAT time at the Joe show. I really do.

However, RR has promoted several contests, not just one and we are only hearing from one winner. I laughed when I read the part of Jenn's blog where she mentioned the Chicago contest winners and said "you know who you are!" Well, who are they? The rest of us would like to know.

I am not 100% familiar with laws regarding contests and sweepstakes but generally it always seems that there is a part in the fine print that ANYONE can request a list of the winners from a contest they have entered. Saying that they haven't announced the winners for fear crazy BHs will threaten them is just BS. And likely illegal.

    ReplyDelete
  172. I find is amazing that Jenn has closed all comments on her blog. All but one of them were negative. Hmmm....Do ya think maybe that's not exactly what she was expecting?

I think they are both nervous. That's the vibe I get when reading both of their responses to this; that they are nervous and scrambling for answers.

My hope is that Joe will soon step forward and let us know how he feels about all of this. I will be SHOCKED if he stands behind RR like Dave mentioned last night. I just cannot imagine him being ok with his fans being treated as they have been.

    ReplyDelete
  173. I think by law you have to have contest winners publicly posted within a certain amount of time after the end date. Otherwise fraud can be committed. Fraud.....imagine that.

    ReplyDelete
  174. @drdeming I am glad that you won! I remember awhile back you being involved with another BH and helping her out with getting her a M&G I think. I hold no ill will against you at all!

I think one of our biggest complaints is this whole charity thing and the gold membership. The entire donation concept now is entirely suspect because it changed from money being donated to the hospital that Jules was at, to a bunch of LA hospitals to just a bunch of charities they support. as a gesture of goodwill, I think it would be prudent to tell those donators exactly how much was raised and where specifically those donations were made. It's no wonder we're so suspicious!

And the whining and crying has to stop. I noticed in Jenn's response blog and her individual responses to the comments that she's simply sayng, "nuh uh" and shaking her head profusely! LOL

It will be interesting to see how she responds to each of our individual responses. I have since stopped following both Dave and Jenn. I hope BHs continue to follow suit leaving them with nothing but spammers and their "celebrity friends" to tweet to.

I just want to say thank you for the post. It is very helpful for those of us (me) who thought about buying the gold membership but weren't sure.

  176. I admit, I would not really want my name out there as a contest winner - the people I know on twitter is one thing, but even here I have gotten multiple emails that I would rather not have and a few tweets that were worse. Not all people are good at being happy for others, especially if they feel that they have been cheated in a way (which I can understand).

Oh, and I did help a girl get a ticket to see the New Kids who had a terminal disease. I went through Donnie and talked to him, but oddly in the end it was Dave's people who went through Joe's management that got her a Meet and Greet. I just bought her a ticket along with another fan who has had their life affected - I did not deal with Dave directly with that at all, the other girl did. She was going to the show itself..and knew the girl. I got the ticket and spammed Donnie like crazy, about that time the other fan was contacted by Dave that he was able to get her a M&G through Joe. It was a great thing - she had never been to a concert even, and with her disease only remembered her New Kids days. I wish I could have been there, but the other girl who was said she was SOOO happy. Now, back to the topic.

I did a little research to make myself feel better about accepting the prize here. There are about 6000 people that follow Dave on twitter, and I am not sure about Jenn. Retrorewind is a syndicated program that is heard all over the US on different programs (especially the Saturday show, from what I understand the Block Parties are an addition they made recently? Not totally sure on that though). THe syndicated part is the "Big Show" though which I think started about 10-12 years ago. Most NK Fans joined when they came back and they started offering different Joe things. Since they still do the Big Show each Saturday, it would follow that this syndication is the MAJORITY of their listeners. I know of one fan who has came forward saying she won the Chicago show (she tweeted last night). That means that 10% are known (whether or not there was a follow through). Depending on the number of people who listen places other than the web (which is still the majority in Radio) it could be the others are not Twitter Blockheads. I am looking for more numbers, but statistically - it looks possible (I am still researching).

I think asking questions is good, as I even told Katie yesterday. But I also think that sometimes strong movements like this make people afraid tro come forward if they disagree or have different information. This could be because I was the only one - but I was also terrified people would be mad or think that I was "in on the scam" which was insinuated by some in the minority to me. Then it is not just saying you won, it is putting your name and integrity in a place you may not want it. Getting that group to come forward now is not the best environment, and I am not sure I would not want my name given out either as a matter of privacy.

I know Dave't response was not nice on twitter. But I know when he called to confirm last night there was only one thing on his mind - his kids and their hearing today. Some time is needed. I think in time everything will come out, good, bad, ugly, or in between. I do not think that Joe would let himself be used in a contest (or his management) that was not fulfulled.

I am not saying anyone else's opinion is wrong btw, most people would think I am too passive or too forgiving or not suspicious enough. The good thing is I can vouch I was like this long before I won the contest...I trust very easily and I admit it. I support a healthy questioning of things - especially money that goes to charity. That being said I did not ask for a reciept or a donation certificate for the money for Brinley or for the Christmas money. I am not itimizing this year, so I did not ask for a receipt. Hopefully soon we will see all the donation info - for the contests, etc. Ok enough rambing from me, I need to work where I can go play! Hopefully I see some of you in NY? Allison

  177. Wow, Thanks for speaking up guys. So glad I did not put any money into Gold. I really hope you guys do report this and we get the answers to where the money went. I pray that the kids will be ok no matter what happens with their case. Thanks for stopping others for wasting their money.

  178. Allison thanks for coming forward - I think it's great that you did, and you shouldn't have to worry that people will dislike you for winning a contest - that's silly! I think the point of Katie's post was simply that we'd like answers, and where Dave has failed to fulfill, you have, in some regard - so thanks. I also don't think that anyone here was questioning your integrity, but rather Dave's. If I recall (and I'm not sure because I only listened to RR intermittently) I think when he announced you as a contest winner (or, he may have just given a generality of who the winner was of the Brinley contest, I can't even remember), I do seem to remember him alluding to knowing or being friends with the winner. So that may be where the rumor came from that Dave was personal friends with the winner. But again, I can't remember all the details. Regardless, you should NOT feel bad about winning the contest and I think it's fabulous that you are going to get to enjoy a great time at the Joeshow this weekend! :)

  179. Dr. Deming, I think it is great that you did win and everything worked out well for you. I think that is why Katie made this post in the first place. I do think that Dave and Jenn have decided to take out their agressions on Katie and the rest of the dissatisfied people though. Most of Katie's post were questions about what happened and Dave decided to be petty and unprofessional and call people sore losers and give out Katie's Twitter name so people could DM her.

And much of Jenn's blog was also not any better. I understand things come up, but as someone said, you should not offer a contest unless you are sure there is some way for it to work out eventually. Also, her reasoning that stores don't give you back money when something goes on sale so quickly after you purchased it seems ill researched. Where has she been the last 10 years or so. Every large retailer offers price adjustments on their items for the specific reason of retaining customers and showing good customer service.

I wanted to post those comments on Jenn's blog, but she seems to have halted all comments there. It is unfortunate because I thought this would create a dialogue between them and their disappointed subscribers.

  180. I just want to lend my support to this cause because it seems like a lot of innocent people have been taken by Retro Rewind and it is completely unfair. I started to follow Dave when I got on Twitter because I kept reading replies about him and was interested to learn more since it was NKOTB related. After being bombarded by his tweets to buy this package and that package, I got turned off by the whole thing. It seemed like such a scam from day 1. I quickly unfollowed him and never gave him a cent. I totally feel for anyone who gave their hard earned cash to this loser and I hope that he will be penalized for his actions. I will gladly sign any petition or form to have him investigated. That's all we should be asking for right now, an honest GOVERNMENT investigation. If he is proven innocent by the court or whatever fine, but my gut tells me that this guy is a major con artist and he will have to answer to all of this very soon. He "effed" with the wrong people!!

  182. It is shady that people were forced to donate to a private business account and not an IRS recognized charity account. I believe the IRS would like them to report all those "donations" as income since I assume Jenn's company is not a recognized charity. People should know not to mess with the IRS. Audit anyone?

  183. Real quick, I received this from the Chicago contest winner on twitter: "Yes I won on Oct 24th. I got an email back late last night about it, so hoping things finalized soon." She had sent me a tweet after I thanked Joe and Dave, and I sent an email to Dave saying she she was not contacted. I also gave her Dave's email...and I think she emailed him too. Either way, looks like she has things worked out, or working out which is good to see!

  184. I do not choose to become attached to this conversation - however - being my son's name, and my name, is being mentioned... I would like the oppertunity to respond.

    1) My son, Brinley, is a real person. Joe can vouch that he is a real person. Infact, Joe knows quite a bit about my son. My son was never a secret.

    2) Brinley does have medical issues. As a single parent, it's hard to offer the full attention necessary for his medical needs. I am not unaware that people have other issues, or worse issues with their child/children. It just happens that Brinley has needs that are expenses to maintain.

    3) I did not ask for Dave to do anything related to a "charity" in Brinley's name. He offered to do this for me, as a friend. I have known Dave since the Meet Joe Mac era, and he was one of the few people to PUSH for Joe as a solo artist on a non-major lable. In Radio this is almost unheard of (at least at that time), and he was always a good friend to Joe's career - that I can vouch for. As far as myself, Dave made every effort to help me - without my asking him too - and I am grateful for his concern for Brinley and myself.

4)I am elated that someone "won" a chance to see Joe perform because they 'donated' to help my son. I am so appreciative to EVERYONE who donated to my son's medical bills, even though I couldn't name you by email or dollar amount. The fact that anyone found it in their hearts to help me finance his ongoing medical expenses, is deeply touching and I cannot thank you enough.

    5) What you think about Dave or Jenn is your business. I am not trying to change anyone's mind. Personally, I have known Dave to be on the up and up. I am only stating my point of view. To me, he is a friend, and in this business, that's a word not used lightly.

    6) Without foundation, to have your child taken from you, let alone all of your children, is a horror no parent should face. No matter what you think of how this has been handled online, or via tweets and emails, this is a horrific event for these 2 people, and their innocent children. Throughout this time, Dave has always been in touch with me about MY son, and at a time when it would be expected that he has other things to contend with.

Again, I am not asking anyone to change their opinions. I am putting forth that the donations in Brinley's name is real, my son is real, his medical issues are real, and Dave was the ONLY person to address my personal situation and did something to help me. I hope my comments offer answers to the validity of this topic - at least where my son's name is mentioned.

Thank you for you time, your donations, and you concern for my family.

  185. Hey! I tried sending you a message on Twitter last night, but I have no idea how Twitter works as far as posting messages (I follow, I never post myself). Anyway, I have a VERY interesting story pertaining to this topic that I would LOVE to share with you!! The thing is, I don't want to share it with everyone who reads your tweets or your blog. Can you please send me an e-mail to j9577@ymail.com and I will share?? :) It's a really good story, I swear you won't be disappointed! ;)

  188. Dear Miss Ehrlich, Thank you for your efforts to tell us Brinley is real & also to vouch for your friend. I too was around during Meet Joe Mac era-what "in this business" might you be in? Are you also in radio? Please understand no one here doubts that your son is REAL (not sure what "Joe" has to do with that)but we are asking for an accounting of the DONATIONS made toward his medical expenses-Again, thank you for your effort & if you can please provide us with this specific information (which as you know is EXTREMELY easy to do) there will be no question that the $$ given to Dave Harris went to those particular expenses. Can you please provide us with that tally & proof?

It will be way easier for you to forward that to us as opposed to having an investigative journalist/media outlet(which unfortunately for DH&JH several BHs work for)seek the information out...
God Bless both you & your son in the New Year! :)

  190. Very nice to hear from Brinley's mom, thank you for your input.

I feel better knowing my donation went to the right place.

  191. *If* Dave had actually given the money to an actual charity (ie not his own children or wallet) he should have immediately posted/shown proof that every penny of the money went to that charity.

Notice how everyone is texting money to the Red Cross for the Haiti earthquake victims. THE MONEY IS GOING DIRECTLY TO THEM.

I know you are reading this Dave & Jenn - You need to provide actual proof and statments showing that the money went to charity. IT'S THE LAW.

  192. Thanks for this blog Katie!! I thought I was alone in my thoughts. I stopped following Dave and RR a few months ago. Just got tired of the "Hey gang I need more moeny" business. Between the name dropping and the unprofessional yelling at CUSTOMERS it just became too much for me. Thanks for putting into words what so many of us have felt!

  193. Thanks Allison(Dr Deming) for being diplomatic-That is all we are asking of anyone-Dont aplogize for winning the contest WE are very happing for you. (I keep an accounting of ALL my donations even when we do not itemize in the event of an audit)As you said everything will come out Good,Bad & Ugly-Rest assured nothing is against you-Thanks for being so forthcoming...**May I ask WHEN you were notified that you WON?**date, time,by email or phone intitially)Again thank you for providing clarity where others seem to refuse to...& again no reflection on you :)

  194. Funny how in Jenns blog she speaks of them having other artists chats, contests etc that encompass GOLD...Yet not a single one of these artists has ever done a chat nor have they promoted a single contests for these artists(with the exception of Scott Grimes-who as we know actually is Daves personal friend(yikes!))

Even when Dave posted downloads of him & Scott Grimes songs he still charged a "donation" for that--yes a donation to Lets Get This-Joes foundation to get the pack of songs--Why doesnt he provide proof of the LGT/First Book donations-we all know they give receipts for EVERY donation-bcuz we all got them!

FACE IT RETRO REWIND--the only people paying for your service is Blockheads---thats why you dangle Joe in front of their faces like a carrot--Donnie doesnt touch this guy w/a 10foot pole--I think the only reason he was someone cordial to him is Dave's friendship w/Grimes who Donnie knows.(As soon as Joe started following him on twitter he stopped posting the pics of him w/Donnie & Grimes & stopped the spamming about "my boy DDub"here's another pic of me in the kitchen w/him--One can only assume bc Joe would have probably read that thinking really since when are you so tight with Donnie?)

  195. I just think it's kind of sad that Dave and Jenn reacted the way they did and that Dr Deming and Brinley's mom had to come on here and give the details. As business owners, Dave and Jenn should have remained calm and provided enough facts to answer Katie's concerns.

I think RR makes promises way too quickly (It's probably with the best intentions) but it's poor business and every undelivered promise/feature has turned this into something much bigger than it ever should have been.

  196. I do not have a problem giving that information (I think I already have), but WHO am I giving it to exactly? My name is on here, my twitter account, etc - but the demand of information from who and what is going to be done with it?

Also I do not think that it is entirely fair to ask for details accounts of information when 1) we know Dave is in court today and 2) they have been given no time to provide it. Financial records take time to comb through, I think there should be a reasonable request for information made and time to provide it.

I have given as much information to help people out yet the majority of the comments here are all "anonymous". If you feel that the customers have been made victims by a scam, asking them for vouch for things they win or how much they received or are donated is doing it again. I want to be helpful but the contract is between Members and RetroRewind, not directly between any Member, winners, or recipients of donations.

  198. To whomever contacted earlier in this blog, I'm sorry you didn't leave your name. It would have been nice to acknowledge you directly. That said, thank you for your comments on behalf of myself and my son.

I am not planning to address to this topic continually, but I do feel the need to make this statement.

Dave Harris is a friend of mine. I am not a famous person, I have nothing to promote on his radio show. I worked for Joe's mgmt company (hence my part in the business) during his solo years, and my contact with Dave is now of a personal friendship, not a professional necessity. I am not here as PR for retro rewind, or for the Harris family.

I initially posted because someone felt the need to question my child, and/or the validity of his medical issues (in reference to the donation link set up for Brinley cares), and refered to myself as a "family friend" as if we weren't real. I promise you, we are!!! =)

I also have proof that Dave was, and continues to be, sensitive to my situation. Combining a request for donations to help me, and offer "the fans" a chance to be connected to Joe via concerts or rehearsals, or whatever Joe was willing to agree too, was Dave attempting to raise funds for MY SON. I am appauled to think someone believes that Dave would use my son's name and situation to gain money for his own personal use.

As far as "proof", it is not my job to showcase, or exploit, such facts in a public forum. If anyone has concern over their issues with retro rewind, please take them up directly with the people necessary. I am not that person, but I thank you for your time in reading this post.

  199. I think asking winners who are willing to come forward (thank you Dr. Deming) is not the way to gather the information many of you are looking for. If Dave would just post a list of winners, not specific information about them (i.e. exact location, full names, twitter names, etc.) it would satisfy their requests. For example, Sue P., Missouri. It's unfair to demand that the people that won ANYTHING give out specific information. There are privacy laws to protect people. At the same time, if there are a slew of winners, just post something. By not announcing anything, people get suspicious.

Don't get me wrong. I am not amused by RR's actions, at all. They do have people to answer to. I think the right thing to do is to answer questions. How about instead of extending time on Gold Memberships, offer partial refunds to those who want them. If the majority of your fan base, Gold Members, are non-NKOTB related, then it shouldn't be a difficult task.

Mollie, I commend you for coming forward when you didn't have to. You are correct that it is not your place to provide the proof that you were given money. People are so upset that they are asking questions, but, receiving no answers. It is truly up to Dave to provide that his charity events are going to the person/people they are designated to go to.

Dave, it's time to stop the name calling. Just provide the answers so many people are looking for. If you would do that, people wouldn't be so upset. Do what's right. What goes around, comes right back around. Take a look in the mirror, it could be the answer as to why all these bad things are happening to you.....
